Re: New Site Details
Go ahead and do prototypes with myBB, just expect to re-do them when/if the actual site goes upWishLine wrote:MegaSonicX wrote:OK then. MyBB is pretty simple to use. I can somewhat see the resemblance to vB and it shouldn't be that hard to get the skin done. The built in Template editor is basically the same as phpBB but with a slightly different navigator. That's gonna take some getting used to. I really like the Stylesheet editor though
Overall, I really like it. Now should we go ahead and make a test forum just to work on the skin or should we make a new domain (e.g. weridethelines.com) and work on that? I'd recommend we make a free test site so that we don't have to pay for hosting the domain. The site would probably be something like "weridethelines.comeze.com" or something.
Any thoughts?
Only this for now - we have to work at Rabid's pace. Rushing ahead of ourselves and doing tonnes of work when he hasn't the time or money won't achieve much. So wait for him to give us the go-ahead.

Rabid, do you think RevO's point about the crawler is an important one or would we be happy to start afresh without threads and members transferred over?

Re: New Site Details
It's not really necessary for a forum like this, where much of the relevant content is hosted externally by YouTube. There's only really one or two important threads that need to get brought over, but the only important content in those threads is in the first post, so there's no need to use a crawler to bring over the resulting responses in the thread.
Tbh a restart of the forum would be rather good - if we're moving to a new site, I think it would be a good idea to take a look at everything about this forum and determine whether there need to be changes made (I've already made my point about PotD). Personally, I find it absurd that three out of the top four sections of the forum are dead. Shouldn't tracks and engaged riding go at the top of a forum about Line Rider?

Above rules, download instructions, and announcements?

Most forums don't give rules a separate forum to them selves, IIRC MyBB comes with an announcement feature that lets you post a thread and it will show up above every other thread on the site so you can always have a link to the rules no matter where you are (except inside of a thread reading it). The same can go for download instructions.
Re: New Site Details
Now that I think about it, it may be nice to have the rules and download instructions in the same thread. That way people might actually read them on their way down to the download link. Let's see what rabid thinks.
That just leaves announcements. Where would it go? With all the formatting and spacing and such that goes around a whole separate forum section, it'd be pretty silly to have one with just one thing in it. Maybe in a hidden section that can be accessed from the navbar or the home page? That seems a bit too hidden to me somehow, though.

I think the Guide to I Ride the Lines was a good call in times of old. Just add in the downloads and embedding to that, maybe?

That's what I think would look good and keep people focused on the reason for the site/niche (new members can see what they are here to see at the top).

Re: New Site Details
Interesting suggestion. I find it weird to have announcements at the bottom, though. They're announcements, not whispers.
Could the sections possibly be next to each other? I mean, most people will easily have a large enough resolution to fit that, and it'd compress the page to the point where you probably won't even have to scroll. I'm not sure if that's possible with current versions of forum software, though.
Also, everyone remember that the final decision is entirely up to the admins, and I suppose ultimately rabid.

I'm not really sure :/
I feel like people don't read the rules or the play and download sections already... I don't think combining them would help.
we could probably take the wiki down, but announcements should really stay up...

I agree. Every section is only a small scroll away, and it's pretty obviously a forum dedicated to Line Rider...I don't think people need any more convincing. The rules however, may need much more convincing.
Of course, you see the opportunity here. It's a massive opportunity to discuss changes and experiment. Rabid, do you think this can happen any time soon? Realistically?

Re: New Site Details
What about my suggestion - have them horizontally next to each other? WRtL-related stuff to the right, LR-related stuff to the left. Again, I'm not sure if it'd be possible, but that way you could have both things "on top"
And then if you put the echelon on top of that in one column, with the other sections below in two columns, and off-topic on the bottom in one column, it could look pretty spiffy.

I love the theory, but I have yet to see a forum or plugin that would do that. Pity :-/

<div style="width:50%; float:left;" />
<div style="width:50%; float:right;" />
That'itinerary way of doing it. It would most likely require a bit more work but that's the basic gist of it.
If making members see the rules is that important, what we could do is redirect them to the rule and guidelines page immediately after registration or email verification.

Plenty of mods for that, I imagine

Re: New Site Details
It probably won't be necessary to use mods though. Most forums/forum software already redirect the user to the home page after email verification/registration. We just need to edit that link and we're good.
Re: New Site Details
I think having a mod that requires a new user to read the rules before posting would be good, there used to be one for vBulletin (and I think IRtL on vB had it) where you had to either scroll all the way down and wait for a timer to go through/read the rules and then click I accept.

Maybe this instead of a mod?: http://sandbox.scriptiny.com/tinybox2/. Of course we'd have to disable the close when you click outside the box and add the timer. Then we'd have to add more JavaScript to close the box once the timer hits 0. Maybe something like this:
- Code:
<html>
<head>
<script type="text/javascript">
var timer;
var TotalSeconds;
function CreateTimer(TimerID, Time) {
timer = document.getElementById(TimerID);
TotalSeconds = Time;
UpdateTimer()
window.setTimeout("count()", 1000);
}
function count() {
TotalSeconds -= 1;
UpdateTimer()
window.setTimeout("count()", 1000);
}
function UpdateTimer() {
timer.innerHTML = TotalSeconds;
}
function count() {
if (TotalSeconds <= 0) {
document.getElementById("timer").className = "huge";
return;
}
TotalSeconds -= 1;
UpdateTimer()
window.setTimeout("count()", 1000);
}
</script>
<style type="text/css">
.huge {
font-size: 50px;
}
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div id="timer">
<script type="text/javascript">window.onload = CreateTimer("timer", 10);</script>
</div>
</body>
</html>
With that code, there will be a timer set to start at 10 seconds. When it hits 0, then the text size will increase. That's just a simple example. What we could do is place a button within the "light box" and in CSS add display: none;. Then in another class we set display: block;. For those of you who don't know, that'll make the button invisible until the timer hits 0. Any thoughts?
Re: New Site Details
Wouldn't it just be easier to use a mod? Plus it gives another teaching experience for rabid.

True. I mainly did that to ease the use on mods and to spend less time looking for them. But if you can find one that does what we want it to do, then by all means use it.
Now for the beta site. Should I just go ahead and make a new account at 000WebHost an set up MyBB? Or does rabid want to do it?

If he has the money I think he should go with HostGator, pretty cheap and the smallest package would work for this site.

Don't really understand what the guys was saying but I'll take your word for it.
Didn't rabid say he doesn't have much money right now? And does HostGator give a free account option?

No they don't, but 000webhost isn't reliable, they go down every other day for sites I see use them, plus they don't give much space for a MySQL database.
