Re: New Site Details
O.K. then. But I still think that we should find some free host that way rabid won't have to pay for all the months we're working on the site. Also I've ran 2 separate phpBB forums on one account without a single problem. IDK what's the problem there.TheRevTastic wrote:MegaSonicX wrote:TheRevTastic wrote:MegaSonicX wrote:TheRevTastic wrote:Wouldn't it just be easier to use a mod? True. I mainly did that to ease the use on mods and to spend less time looking for them. But if you can find one that does what we want it to do, then by all means use it.
Now for the beta site. Should I just go ahead and make a new account at 000WebHost an set up MyBB? Or does rabid want to do it?
If he has the money I think he should go with HostGator, pretty cheap and the smallest package would work for this site.

Don't really understand what the guys was saying but I'll take your word for it.
Didn't rabid say he doesn't have much money right now? And does HostGator give a free account option?
No they don't, but 000webhost isn't reliable, they go down every other day for sites I see use them, plus they don't give much space for a MySQL database.

Oh yeah! My bad, I forgot about the posts... But either way. The test forum most likely wil only have about 100 posts at the end of it all.TheRevTastic wrote:MegaSonicX wrote:O.K. then. Using 000webhost or w/e it's called for a test bed to get the styling done and forums/permissions etc is good but not for a live site. You also have to teach rabid how to move over the database from 000webhost to what ever he chooses .
Re: New Site Details
Yeah that's what I'm saying. We use 000WebHost for making the skin and then we set up the HostMonster account to do the permissions, set the rules, etc. That way we won't have to move the database. (something which I have no idea how to do )TheRevTastic wrote:MegaSonicX wrote:Oh yeah! My bad, I forgot about the posts... But either way. Re: New Site Details
Oh by the way rabid, when/if you get your own hosting you can set up a wiki under wiki.weridethelines.com.
Re: New Site Details
I think there should be a new forum on this board dedicated to discussion of the new one...there are so many people willing to give advice and opinions.

I kind of like hedge's idea of two columns - we could probably fit lots more on a screen without any scrolling needed.
Another thing, while we're on this subject - often times people just use "recent posts" - we could have more options, like checkboxes for the different sections to be looking for recent posts in - maybe even multiple sections of recent posts you can make as a user. Anyone understand what I'm talking about?
I wonder if there's a way to combine the recent posts with the typical forum broswer in a way that makes it better for both?

already done - PM for all new users asks them to read the rules, links themMegaSonicX wrote:If making members see the rules is that important, what we could do is redirect them to the rule and guidelines page immediately after registration or email verification.

As WishLine (I think) said, though, do you know of any plugins/mods/whateverthey'recalled that could do that? =/rabid squirrel wrote:I kind of like hedge's idea of two columns - we could probably fit lots more on a screen without any scrolling needed.
Same comment I just made before - any plugin-type-whatevers that do that? It would be a cool system if we could do it.rabid squirrel wrote:Another thing, while we're on this subject - often times people just use "recent posts" - we could have more options, like checkboxes for the different sections to be looking for recent posts in - maybe even multiple sections of recent posts you can make as a user. What, you mean completely reinvent what a forum is? I don't think there's any forum software that lets you do that, and I'm not going all FlagCapper on you and coding one from scratch, and I doubt other people will do it.rabid squirrel wrote:I wonder if there's a way to combine the recent posts with the typical forum broswer in a way that makes it better for both?

There are no plugins/mods/applications that do that, only certain skins/styles made form forum scripts will do it. So you could possibly use what MSX said but that is a dirty work around .

^ Wait, so all you need to make it have two columns is a skin that supports it? Are you serious?

Re: New Site Details
Hedgehogs4Me wrote:^ Wait, so all you need to make it have two columns is a skin that supports it? Are you serious?
Yes but it usually takes a bit of css/html changing especially for forums that still uses tables to show the forums created (which almost every single one does and should get away from).
Edit: As I said MSX's way is a dirty hack, it will most likely not work due to forums not being listed in the html templates, that's why you would need a skin that does this, but even skins that do this you cant have certain forums on either side unless you spend a lot of time re-arranging them all to make it do so.

<div class="forum_title">{FORUM_TITLE}</div>
<div class="forum_body">{FORUM_BODY}</div>
In the template code it would say that only once. That means that those two DIVs would only show up once. But the forum software is smart enough to know to copy that as many times as needed if there is more than 1 forum. Since it doesn't automatically call every last forum, we can't set one to be on the left and one to be on the right.
So now, we'd have to find a different workaround...
Re: New Site Details
hedge, I have no idea about any of this stuff, I'm just throwing out concept ideas. Since I would be building the forum from scratch with free software anyhow I would think altering the code would be possible if I knew the language.

Rabid, this is why I say - please make a forum for this. There's too much excitement and discussion for one thread. Invent a section! :-)

So it basically makes multiple forum_body tags for each section of the forum?MegaSonicX wrote:Now that I think about it, it most likely won't work. What these types of forums do is something like this:

Idea:
<div style="height:[whateverthefirsthalfis];width:[some%];float:left;overflow:hidden;"><div class="forum_body">{FORUM_BODY}</div></div><div style="height:[whateverthesecondhalfis];width:[some%];float:right;overflow:hidden;"><div class="forum_body">{FORUM_BODY}</div></div>
So that gets you two columns, and then you get into the dirty part: getting rid of the first half on the second column. I see two obvious ways of doing this:
- We could use Javascript to check the page for repeated tables and deleting them.
- We could use iframes instead of divs to hold the two columns, use scrollTo() for the second one, and hide the scroll bar on both.
Frankly, the second one would be a lot easier, and if they're using tables for web design, why the hell not add in some iframes?
Also, you saying that you'd be able to edit it if you knew the language strikes me as being very similar to someone who says they can edit an OS if they knew the language it were written in. In other words, it'd be a HUGE job. >_<
Secondalso, I second Wish's suggestion about making a subforum somewhere about it. I suggest in the WRtL Center.

Re: New Site Details
Personally I hate hate iframes. While that would make it easier for us, if someone accidentally middle clicks on the iframe, they'll start scrolling around in there. The same thing will happen on iOS devices. Now the second suggestion is better but it might be trickier. We could use jQuery but tbh, my JavaScript and jQuery skills aren't the best so it'll be trial and error for me most of the time. Not to mention I have no idea how we would do it with JS... I'll google it later today.Hedgehogs4Me wrote:So it basically makes multiple forum_body tags for each section of the forum?MegaSonicX wrote:Now that I think about it, it most likely won't work. Any other suggestions guys?
EDIT: nvm. We could try this:
- Code:
var seen = {};
$('div').each(function() {
var txt = $(this).text();
if (seen[txt])
$(this).remove();
else
seen[txt] = true;
});
Re: New Site Details
^That would get rid of the entire second column, wouldn't it, since we're only hiding it and not actually getting rid of it in the first column? or is "seen" actually that literal?

Or we could always ask on the MyBB forums and get an answer from people that worked there, I might be able to ask a friend on Twitter that used to work for MyBB as well.

Someone should really make some forum software that just gives you all the parts and lets you put them together however you want. >_<

Anyway...
How bout we hold off on the 2 column thing for now and focus on other things that were problematic on the first try.
