Thoughts on critique Empty Thoughts on critique

Post by rabid squirrel Wed May 29, 2013 6:20 pm

This is gonna be mostly praise because y'all are great.

With that, here's a history of problematic trends in critique in the past. The years are a very loose indication and none of these are confined to just that year.

2007: "I give this 7/10"
2008: "work on your gravity wells. work on your manuals. add more directional variety. make more tail manuals"
2009: "Less airtime. More flow."
2010: "Your wells can always be stronger"
2011: "Alright, but not your best"
2012: "Something about this track makes me hate it but I don't know why"

In the present, I think on the whole we do a fantastic job of:
  • genuinely encouraging people and appreciating improvement
  • genuinely appreciating and complimenting tracks even if they aren't the best
  • not being jerks
  • appreciating all kinds of tracks and not giving stock one-liner advice
  • telling people exactly what they personally liked about a track

However. I think we may have a case of not-gonna-post-anything-because-I-didn't-like-the-track-all-that-much, so I'm gonna suggest we work on giving negative, but constructive critique. Here's a little guide.
  • If you want criticism from people who didn't like your track all that much (and/or from people who did actually like your track), say so in the OP! (e.g. "All criticism welcome!")
  • When giving critique, just because someone says "all criticism welcome" do not think that means you can shit all over their track. Be gentle.
  • When giving negative opinions, never phrase them as if they are facts. Say "In my opinion..." "to me, anyway..." "I just felt like..."
  • Also make sure to say something you DID like about the track as well. If you totally hated it, it might be better not to post.
  • Be as specific as possible. specific times ("1:14-1:16") are best, specific things ("your nose flings near the end") are also good. Generic things like "your manuals" and "your gravity wells" or "your style" are unhelpful though.
  • If someone posts that criticism is welcome, please consider taking the time to write some. Don't avoid posting just because you didn't like it all that much. If they ask, they will appreciate it.
  • Be open minded (both the critic and the criticized) Everyone has different opinions, and everyone misunderstands each other.
Hope this helps our community. If you have anything to add, say so, and if there is anything you disagree with, say so.

This is a great idea. If we ever get Line Rider viral again (which would be awesome), this should be on the front page of the site so that people can see what we expect on these forums. Plus it's a great reminder for people around here normally.

Wow, it's scary how accurate those average critic depictions year by year are! (Though 2012 is missing 'lacks ____ vibe')

This could use a little improvement, to me anyways. I do like the "be gentle" when giving critique, from the second bullet. I just felt like many responses to tracks these days are either huge paragraphs or funny jokes about how good it was, and neither are very suitable, in my opinion. I'll stay open minded if anyone disagrees with me.

Yo dawg, i herd u like critique, so i critiqued yo critique so you can critique my critique of critique.

Critique is one of those things where really, the most you can do is generalize when structuring it together. I guess these are a few good guidelines to follow, but other than that, there's really not much more we could do to make it sound better.

When I comment on tracks, my only goal is to hurt the track-maker's feelings! Angry

...

Agreed with Opal. And yea, we have been good with feedback on tracks lately. I usually only comment if the track is so crazy I have to say something (Veterans), or I feel like my feedback would actually help out (Newer track-makers). Then again, everybody deserves feedback so I'll try to stop being so lazy. :P

It's not exactly a two sided issue here. Just because the rest of the community agrees on a lot of things doesn't mean that everything about critique is exactly the same as the next.

Even though I've often spoken my mind, I don't feel like I'm understood... at all. As far as I'm concerned, the rest all seems to agree with eachother on ''yeah, criticism is great'' (except boo perhaps). It's especially harder for me because English isn't my native language.
