Chaomocha got into college because of this Line Rider Community
Well, I was hoping to wait until I actually made an official decision as to which college I was going to go to, but my mind has been made up for quite some time, so I figured I'd post my story now.
I think I'll simply start by posting my essay I submitted to colleges. The colleges I applied to required a maximum 500 word count, however my first draft was over 1000 words, so if it seems empty at parts, you know why. I may also post the original version of the essay because it talks more about this community and what I learned and experienced from it more than this edited essay does, but regardless here it is. Just remember kiddies, no plagiarism
I sent this essay, along with a portfolio and the rest of my application, to 4 schools, and was accepted to all the schools I heard back from. For some reason, Drexel University never replied to my application; I wasn't even denied acceptance, just no reply at all. I didn't bother following them up on it either simply because I heard heard back from the school I really wanted to go to. It's interesting how they contacted me actually, I was driving up to work with my dad for the weekend (because we work at a ski mountain and so we have a long drive and just saty friday thru sunday) and I got a call from some wierd number. It turned out that the acceptance letters had just left the school that afternoon, but one of the Graphic Design teachers (I think it was actually the dean of the department but i forget ) had called me personally, on a friday night at 8pm, on her cell phone none the less, to congradulate me on my acceptance. It was pretty exciting considering the circumstances. Then alongside that when I got my letter of recomendation, I also got a nice big ol scholarship/grant/whatever you want to call it from the school, so that was convinient.
I don't mean to brag, but I didn't want to leave the story just there. My dad always used to tell me I should be doing my school work instead of playing line rider or talking on here until 1 am sometimes, but in the end it was this community that I wrote about in my essay, and it was that essay that aided me in my acceptance. Although some of you may not know me, or some of the people I had in mind while I wrote about this community are no longer active memebers *cough*TD*cough*, I still feel like I should share this with all of you collectivly.
And Now my college portfolio, which the schools I applied to looked at these things heavily and took serious consideration into all of them. One of the schools said it counts as about 50% of the decision making process, which for those who have been through the college process know that that is alot riding on just one portfolio... Also, you may recognize several of these peices way back before my departure for senior year, particularly because I posted them on here and was critiqued by several of you as well, which I am very grateful for btw. I think I'll just post a link alongisde an image description. Another fun fact, several of these images were inspired by line rider, or were given the same names as recent tracks and what not. I'll let you be the ones to determine which ones were and which once werent tho
Now for a few side notes:
I may post my original essay if you want me to do that as well/if I can find it.
The heat of the college search is pretty much over, which means I will be returning to WRTL as much as possible. Maybe make a collab or two, wouldn't that be fun .
anyway, thanks everyone! you all get a high five!

- Spoiler:
- His Name Was TechDawgg
I have always wanted to sculpt and curve walls into structures that would be remembered. Building things was my forte and I always wanted to be an architect. Today, however, I am applying to be a Graphics Design major, and I have TechDawgg, the creator of an online community forum, to thank.
My eighth grade science teacher, Mr. Minor, had assigned us an interesting assignment: make a loop-de-loop in the flash game Line Rider. As I meticulously clicked away, the concept of the game overwhelmed me. Playing on my own time, I discovered a following of people making their own videos. The images and scenes people were creating were incredible.
One user’s videos caught my attention. His recordings were clear, his imagery was astounding, and his music was synced. His name was TechDawgg. His credits concluded with a link to his website, iridethelines.com. Its friendly fan-based forum soon became my mid-afternoon oasis. I found myself speaking out more, expressing my opinions and translating them into helpful advice for others to utilize. But behind the scenes I also began thinking more artistically.
One summer night, I grabbed a piece of paper and started drawing images inspired entirely by Line Rider videos. I scribbled and scratched feverishly as my ideas flowed down my arm. It was 1:00 am when my mom told me to go to bed. The next morning I picked up my pen again. I finally finished and posted it online. Encouraged with the praise it received, I was eager to draw more.
My good feelings carried me into my first day of sophomore year, but stopped abruptly when I realized I was not enrolled in Architecture. I was put in Photography I and introduced to Adobe Photoshop. I fell in love. At the end of the year I received the Student Achievement Award for the class. Following tutorials and using free stock images, I began creating pieces on my own that I would post on I Ride the Lines.
Come junior year, I succeeded in getting into Architecture and Photography II. This was a perfect opportunity to compare the two possible options for my future: my original love for architecture or my new love for graphics. However, I felt the restrictions of architecture were stifling my artistic ability. I felt guilty shying away from my original dream, but at the same time I was excited for Photography 2. I began incorporating my own photography into my pieces and occasionally starting from scratch. My artistic mind was maturing in style and skill and had begun to see a possible future wrapped around this work. With satisfaction, my final step was always posting my artwork on TechDawgg’s I Ride the Lines.
TechDawgg always reminded us that Line Rider is not about competition, but is about creativity. I have taken this idea to heart not only in Line Rider but in life. Life is not a game with a scoreboard, but a canvas. This canvas is ours to create, so why not make it the best I possibly can?

That's really awesome to hear, Chao! Congrats on being accepted. I'd freakin' love to see your portfolios. The essay was also pretty nicely written.

lololololol typo somehow, yet thats not how i spelt it on the word document, so yeah h.o
also ill upload my portfolio in a sec, just wanted to see if there was even one person interested before i go and do tht. check the gfx section in just a sec as well, because ive been busy this year too (and by that i mean ive only made one and a half pictures so far, but one of them ive put easily over 100 hours into making it, and the other about 60 hours, and i have very limited time to work on then, so when i say ive been working on them all year, i mean it...)

Pretty cool
I wish I had a way with words to write an essay that didn't end up making it sound like I just waste time/will sit on puter all day.
That's why I didn't do an essay about it.
meh

Re: Chaomocha got into college because of this Line Rider Community
yeah, well like I said, I had a 1000+ word essay and had to cut it down to 500, so I got a ton of help from a ton of people to try and do tht. it was a much more ridiculous process than I expected it to be...

That's so awesome.
Like Purtle, I wish I was as adept at English as you are to transform my unhealthy obsession with Line Rider into something college-worthy. Oh well.

Well, on the first note : Congratulations on your decision, and i really do wish you the best on your journey
On the second note : The writing was very well thought out, with very clearly expressed sentences that seem to flow and create a vivid visualization in one's head. I really like how you put alot of consideration and thought into the essay, and that just shows how your accountability would be valued in the college.
Third note : Although i'm not a huge fan of your portfolio art, i am making mine right now, for architecture. I really don't know the standards for college, but some of the pictures seem rough, even though i know it must've taken you alot of energy and time to muster up the creations. But Vita, Immersion and follow me were my favourites.
Yeah, well hope you get through college ^^

This makes me really happy.
Congrats on your acceptances. They were well-deserved, judging by your portfolio. I didn't write my main Common App essay about LR (wrote about programming), but I did write about IRTL when we had to describe extracurricular activities. I made some pretty passionate passages about it.

Re: Chaomocha got into college because of this Line Rider Community
lol yeah splash, you can prolly guess where i got tht name that picture was a spur of the moment thing too, i was just in a dark room and there were some glowsticks on a table so i tried doing different things with them to make light trails (immersion) but then i was like mkay, what if i just keep the light source still and move the camera, so i did, and i got vita, and then i tried combining the two scenarios together and got the original for follow me, but then i edited it alot if it wasnt already obvious
line rider is one of my only drawings ever, it was my first actually. i have a few others based off of a similar style but just about everything i ever have drawn has been something ive seen from line rider.
also, and I'm not sure why because i've edited my first post about twice now, but it keeps spelling TechDawgg with two g's, which now leads me to believe those mods are up to no good with the word filters trolololo

Holy crap! I suck at writing essays like this, lol
I always end up starting it good, but then I keep having to use dull/boring sentences/words later on because I am not a very creative writer
I also remember seeing a lot of those images before.

Re: Chaomocha got into college because of this Line Rider Community
I think I may as well post my essay here, which was on a similar topic. This essay (along with other things) got me the top Scholarship at St Olaf College. Some of you may have seen part of it before but probably not the whole thing.
This one was actually a 500-word essay I expanded into a 1000-word essay for a loal scholarship (the 500 word version I submitted to colleges, it doesn't talk about Bolted to the Wall and doesn't have the last paragraph.
- Spoiler:
- I'm not entirely normal, but I'm not entirely abnormal either. In fourth grade I took an Asperger's test, and was "sort-of" diagnosed with autism, wavering back and forth along the line on the graph they showed my parents. For a long time, especially through middle school, I was similarly a "kind-of" social outcast, wavering back and forth between fitting in and not fitting in. Sometime around my freshman year in high school, though, it somehow turned around, and I became a happier and more confident person. For some reason, I felt I enjoyed being an "outcast" sometimes, and so I've spent high school shuffling back and forth, making connections with lots of different people but never really belonging to a group. I find I get a sort of individualist satisfaction out of it. But what was the reason for this change? At the risk of oversimplifying, I would say it was my re-discovery of the Internet.
The spark was a program called Game Maker, which I was introduced to at a Game Design Camp in the summer. I completely latched onto the software and kept working on making computer games long after the weeklong camp was over. In a series of events involving a long car trip, a laptop with a three-hour battery, and an email to the camp instructor, I found myself coming back to another similar camp to show what I'd created in a month: a game called Blobert Snowboarding. The next summer, the counselor, XXXXX, asked me if I would like to be a "student helper" and help teach other kids this software, and I've been doing that every summer since.
As an indirect result of this, I rediscovered the Internet and became interested in a game called Line Rider. What fascinated me about it was that it's really more of a toy than a game; you can make anything you wish to and show it to the world. Before I knew it, I was involved in an online community with thousands of members, based around Line Rider. I was inspired by other members of this community to create an enormous Line Rider project over a period of many months, which I named “Bolted to the Wall.” When I finished, I felt an incredible sense of satisfaction, and I still feel immensely proud of this project. I realized that, for me, doing a large project well and feeling good about it is one of the best ways to achieve happiness.
My involvement in the Line Rider community ended up being more of a growing and learning experience than a hobby. I discovered that I have a talent for recognizing details, organizing information, and expressing my thoughts in typing, and that I can motivate myself to do the stuff that nobody else seems to want to do. Surprisingly, as I did this online, I started to do the same kinds of things in real life, such as staying after band class every day to clean up the percussion section. I also discovered that when I talked to people online, I could write something, think about it, edit it, and then hit "post," something that came more naturally to me than real life conversation, with all of its confusing body language and tones of voice. Even more surprisingly, once I learned how to hold a conversation with typing, real life conversation actually got easier.
I became a volunteer administrator on this forum, and discovered along the way how much I loved this role in my life. Somehow, I went from saying "I'm bored..." three times a day to "I wish I had more time in my day!" just as often. I realized I was doing something I loved doing and made a difference in the world, even having a positive effect on other lives the same age as mine. I've developed leadership and negotiation skills, which I never dreamed of having, along with a sense of judgment and critical thinking to work through a problem or critique something. But most importantly, doing positive things and enjoying it at the same time made me feel great about myself. All in all, it changed my life dramatically, so much in fact that I found I was a more outgoing person at school and was more confident, mature, and above all, happy. I no longer hesitate to answer the question, "Have you found joy in your life?" with "Absolutely!" But possibly even more important is the question "Has your life brought joy to others?" I firmly believe I speak truly when I say, "Yes."
I don’t know where I will be years from now, but one thing that this whole experience has taught me about myself is my two most important values. One is the ability to create something that I can feel proud of, and the other is the ability to affect the lives of others in a positive way. While I may not know exactly how I will live out these values, I am determined to send a positive message to everyone I can reach by putting something in the world that didn’t exist before I created it, and I will draw on all the talents and resources I have to do this in every way I can.

thanks everyon for the positive remarks. Rabids post also reminded me of something, which was that of the colleges that i got into, I got a scholarship from each one, with ranging values.
@Rabid, really cool that we both wrote about similar things, and in doing so were rewarded Your description of conversing easier online I find to be a true statement as well. I also sorta hinted to the fact that my confidence derived from my pride in what ive been creating, where as you had just said it. I bet wer arent the only ones on this forum that feel this way either, would be cool to find out mayhaps
