Contest Idea: Track Jam
You may have heard of "game jams", where a bunch of people have a set amount of time to make their own games, which are then judged to see what one reigns supreme. This amount of time ranges from a few hours to a week or so. With the prevalence of LRA and lrjs as track editors that are magnitudes faster than previous flash versions, a track making contest following the theme of a game jam seems like it'd be pretty feasible.
This could even be a livestream event; if one main person streaming could go around to each competitor and use skype or something else to share screens, if that makes sense.

This doesnt even have to be a one-time thing, because a lot of game jams have themes that the games have to include, meaning we could draw a theme from a hat random.org and go with that.
Probably no themes for the first one though, just so people can get a feel for it.
I'd be willing to set this up, should I make a new thread or just roll with this one

Re: Contest Idea: Track Jam
I love the idea. I could be a host if you need someone to do that
I'd make a new thread, but first we should decide when and how long it should be. I vote for a 1-day jam to start us off.

Re: Contest Idea: Track Jam
I think it should be 2 days, mostly because in the game jams, people schedule time off so that they get their full 24 hours in. This is a little less organized and a lot of us have busy schedules, so a two day event might give those people near a 24 hour total.
Also, for the first contest, theme or no theme? I think we should hold off on themes until the next one, just so people can get their bearings and see what they can do sp far.

Re: Contest Idea: Track Jam
I'd probably even participate honestly, if not everyone was against it. The thing keeping me from playing LR is just i doing want to dedicate a ton of time to a track, but just a few hours (especially if charity is involved maybe?) I'd be up for trying at least once.

when you set a date, that'll be a deadline for me to fix all the currently documented bugs in lrjs

Re: Contest Idea: Track Jam
This would be like the equivalent of the 10-minute challenge, but rather than 10 minutes you'd have like 24 hours. Am I getting it? I'd probably join if it was scheduled in a weekend I'd have time (so probably not a very high chance, but I like the idea )
Re: Contest Idea: Track Jam
Great idea. We need to make sure the host has a really powerful computer and good internet so it will play smoothly. Also, what would the time frame be for this? We would have to make sure the streamer(s) would be able to broadcast it for the entire duration of the event.

This is a point to be made. If we go for an entire day or longer, would it be wise to choose a few different hosts, so we can take shifts?

Re: Contest Idea: Track Jam
Stream the first hour of track making
Send track file to host
23hrs later send most recent track file to host
Host makes sure the beginnings are identical
Validate entry

Re: Contest Idea: Track Jam
I mean I'd like it to, we just have to organize it
How about it being next weekend? Maybe starting on Friday at noon or even like 12:01 am and then lasting until midnight saturday

Re: Contest Idea: Track Jam
I have a draft of rules here:
- The track must be made on a trk with a distinct scenery watermark that is distributed when the contest starts (stops people from using previously made tracks)
- Any entered track must be posted as a trk file before the deadline (or should they have to record and edit?)
- Thats all of the rules that I think are actually needed
Should the version used be lra, or should it be open to use any version?

Re: Contest Idea: Track Jam
Why limit it? That only limits the participants. If we have to submit the track file anyways it isn't as if anyone could use something like hax or pop lines anyways.Chuggers wrote:Should the version used be lra, or should it be open to use any version?

True, I was only going off the fact that the given contest file would have to be on both versions, but I forgot that the watermark could just be drawn in flash and ported to trk

Re: Contest Idea: Track Jam
I would love to do the following:
- make the logo thingy
- host the jam on twitch (or be a co host or take a shift or whatevs)
- provide a recording and editing service (if people don't want to edit their own tracks)
I like the timeframe.
I agree that the logo should be a .sol which is easily loadable in all versions.
I think having a trk file due is best. How about we provide the option to record & edit their own but it has to be due by midnight Sunday (otherwise I would do it for them)
if people want the host to come check out their project during the jam they would need to provide their skype and keep it open during the jam. But I think this should be optional.

Re: Contest Idea: Track Jam
Have you done much with the logo yet, rabid? My idea was just "Track Jam 2016" in plain text, but I'm not sure how I feel about the 2016 bit. This not being a themed jam, theres really nothing to write besides "track jam".

Re: Contest Idea: Track Jam
No I haven't done anything, you can make it yourself if you like, it's all the same to me haha.
Also as of today I am seeing a play on Friday night so I'll be busy like 6-11 PM on Friday but the rest of the time I am free to do host stuff (well, except when I'm sleeping). I'm thinking maybe one host check in stream broadcast thing saturday early afternoon and one saturday early evening. I would want to do one friday evening too if I wasn't busy, but maybe I could do one late, after I get back.

Needs to say "Welcome to the Jam"Chuggers wrote:Have you done much with the logo yet, rabid? My idea was just "Track Jam 2016" in plain text, but I'm not sure how I feel about the 2016 bit. This not being a themed jam, theres really nothing to write besides "track jam".
"Come on and Slam" is optional
