Necessary changes.
Hey kids.
Ive been mulling this over for a while after seeing all the fantastic developments being made by mhenr and conun.
We have a chance to drastically change line rider, peoples perceptions, workflows and the limits of the game.
For me currently, the largest issue I can see is the size of the line used in the game. This was highlighted when playing "Canvas rider" (the new version of freerider 2) a few days ago. Seeing some of the tracks possible on that game, I tried to figure out the main difference. The new system they use can support hundreds of thousands of lines without any issues. The small lines on the game mean that people can really get in there and put detail into aspects of the track. Line rider is chunky and outdated. We will soon be able to support a much larger amount of lines, but we wont be utilising it correctly if we dont change the scale of the game.
Examples:
The best clouds drawn by techdawg compared to clouds drawn on canvas rider:

Now, what are your gripes, Not new features you want, but simply what do you think needs changing in the game?

More lines + less lag = Always a good thing.
I agree with you. If lines were a little bit thinner, and there was no "minimum line length", scenery would be much more detailed.

Re: Necessary changes.
I'm not so sure about thinner lines, but yeah, the minimum line length should gtfo and lag should decrease

Re: Necessary changes.
I don't see any real difference in line thickness in the picture on the right, they're just slightly thinner than ours.
plus most of techdawgs scenery is very simplistic and easy to replicate. i think gjert, ghosty or even you could do a better cloud, boat, building or nearly anything in linerider for that matter

You're using flash, flash = lag.

But it's the closest thing to be getting done.
Re: Necessary changes.
Simply the fact that you bought that up makes me think you are helping the development for all the wrong reasons. Claiming to be the new mhenr on the TD thread and generally bigging things up elsewhere, its not too cool.kevansevans wrote:No mention of me? Im starting to feel like I should stop v3 all together
Whatsmore, However much the community appreciates the flash advances, i doubt that flash will last much longer if the C version gets up and working. Im taking about major edits in the game that would be possible on new platforms, thinner lines on the flash platform would just mean a higher linecount, and we all know that is nothing but trouble.
Another note: I dont think that scenery lines should be green, with the complex things people are doing nowadays, it just adds more hassle to the process.

I doubt that, the kid making these canvas rider tracks is insane, seriously.
Also - for comparison - full screen LR vs full screen Canvas rider:

TBF, ive been playing around on canvas rider for a while now, and seriously, going back to LR is just pure hell.

Re: Necessary changes.
Play canvas rider instead of line rider then
If we're going to make it LIKE canvas rider, it may as well be canvas rider but he's on a sled...
I just think the removal of lag would be on only necessary change, at least that's what I'd prefer.

Multicoloured lines are user-friendly. Imo.
I think we should keep green lines.

canvas rider looks really nice. The lag thing sounds also really cool. But i think we should also keep the charme of line rider

Problem is, the game wasn't designed to be used to the extent that we use it.HG42 wrote:Multicoloured lines are user-friendly. Imo.

As a scener, having the scenery lines such a bright green does nothing but cause problems, you dont get a very good sense of the values you are putting down.
See, this is the problem.canvas rider looks really nice. The lag thing sounds also really cool. But i think we should also keep the charme of line rider
The game hasn't changed for years, and thus people dont like the idea of any modifications, even if they would open up all new avenues for creation.

I think if we did lose lines for amking scenery, we wouuld lose the real concept of line rider which is creating lines and scenery with lines and just lines. I personally don't like the idea of making scenery like canvas rider, I just like the reduced lag part.

Re: Necessary changes.
If such a new Line Rider version will come, i can publish all my current work tracks, because they suck then

Oh dear god, do you have any idea what thinner lines will do to us sceners?

Re: Necessary changes.
Conun's version = awesome. The double sided lines are looking pretty amazing.
My problems with line rider as it stands:
-Loading times when loading a track
-No "are you sure?" option after clicking delete
-Only one line width
-Crashing from terror script
-Crash resistance too low
I think that's it

Re: Necessary changes.
thanks for the compliments killintime :3
as for me what would make scenery better is the one click dot option. where you just click and a little dot automatically appears. and thinner lines would be pretty nice
i want to try that canvas rider, i've never even heard of it
i would be soooo happy if mhenrs (or any others) version of lr reduced lag, i would be able to make more big projects without having to really rethink something. i can't wait until we start releasing these versions
edit: as for colored lines, i guess they'd be kind of cool. you could do a floral design and have it be many shades of green. things would be VERY realistic then *cough*BHCS*cough* i don't think it would ruin the game of linerider, people can always make the good old fashion black and white if they want its not like if we do have a change everyone HAS to do it.
edit: holy crap canvas rider is really fun, i'm going to strive to make something somewhat decent

Re: Necessary changes.
Well, there could be an option to turn on/off showing what line type is used. Obviously, you'd want it on while working on the TRACK part, but when scening, it's not necessary for all that red/blue to just create more lag.

Re: Necessary changes.
Im personally not that fond on the idea of multiple line colours. To make anything decent you would need a vast library of colours, varying in value and saturation. Whatsmore it would also need a fill tool, it would be terrible otherwise.
In my opinion, a few shades of grey would be much more suitable. I feel multicolour lines would make it look far too tacky.

Re: Necessary changes.
I think this sounds like a very good idea, making the use of thinner lines and bigger lines possible. It definitely seems like it will make it easier to shade, I really hope this will happen.

I actually see what you mean. I totally agree.
Also where would one might find this canvas rider? I am interested in it
