Post by LineRiderGjert Thu Mar 30, 2017 2:40 pm

Hello everyone 8D

I still exist! I'm fairly certain that I do, at least.
This post is going to be a bit aimless, and it might have been better suited for off-topic. Move it there if it is.

Line Rider surfaced in my mind the other day, while I was doodling something in my notebook. I soon found myself watching some old tracks. I eventually came over BS and noticed that the comment section had been overrun by people from the stream of a Let's Player named GoldeGlove a couple of months ago. I guess the odds are miniscule, but if anyone caught that, and remember which stream it was, I would love to know.
I can't get into my old YouTube account either, which is frustrating. I might have been able to infer the date if I could. Anyways, it made for a lot of nostalgia, and I decided that I would drop by the forum and see what's up as soon as I could.

I'm currently studying physics, so that keeps me busy. I have wondered at times whether Line Rider had any part in fuelling my interest in physics. Maybe it was just another manifestation of the same thing. Either way, line riding was awesome. I have a lot of fond memories from both this place and the game itself.

I plan on checking this thread (and maybe lurk around the forum a little) for a while. I'll probably disappear next week. (I'm going to see the LHC at CERN, which I am fairly excited about. Those people are lineriding elementary particles.) But I will try to swing by again during easter. I might even open up LR and mess around a little, for old times sake. Although I highly doubt that I'll actually make anything.

Also, Zeno, if you're still here and reading this, please PM me. I'm sorry for never replying last time. I can't remember exactly where we left it. (And sorry to everyone else, for whom this will make no sense.)

So, is there anything major I've missed? Any jaw-dropping tracks? Any new and exciting developments in the game and/or community? I would love to be brought up to date.

And how are you guys doing? I've missed you all, and I can't wait to hear what you're up to these days.

Hey, glad to see you and glad to see if you're doing well. Not much I can reply to you on this post, but if you want to learn about the style of physics LR uses, you can read up here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verlet_integration

tl;dr Verlet physics is a very simple method of replicating very Newtonian like physics in a 2D simulation. I've been trying to do research to see how to translate that into a 3D model, but I have no idea how to calculate arbitrary plane collision in a 3D environment. Maybe you could help me there? Want to make a 3D LR-esque game.

Oh man, glad to see you again. You probably don't know me too well but you were one of the biggest inspirations to me when getting into all of this stuff. I have to go in a few, but I'll be sure to edit in some other things to this comment soon.

And yes, holy crap have things been kinda crazy track-wise around here recently. I'd highly suggest going to the community picks and browsing a few. It's certainly a different game than what I'd imagine you remember, but we still love it the same.

Post by rabid squirrel Thu Mar 30, 2017 7:48 pm

yo. I'm working on LR projects pretty much every day, though I mostly just lurk on WRTL these days.

I made a celebration of 10 years of LR:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cho86RbH6ac
I made a retrospective on my personal 10 year anniversary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTirNh6DAh4
I made a video where I talk about my top 10 favorite tracks of 2016: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iv3JvCBVDwQ
Also, working on a huge project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-a6DlVmErk
I dunno if you saw Driftwood or i squared? Those are the 2 scenery tracks I've released in the last couple years.
Also, OTDE had a kickass scenery track release, The Gorge, dunno if you saw that but if not you should check it out.
Don't feel obliged to click on or look up any of this, but feel free to check out anything you're interested in.

There are two new versions of LR in the last 2 years, LRA and LRJS, with things like playback scrubbing, built in music sync, line adjustment, and live updating - totally changed the possibilities and the workflow of making a track. Oh and virtually no scenery lag unless you get like 100,000+ lines on screen at once, which sadly did not result in more scenery tracks being released. And Conundrumer & mhenr18 made a deal with InXile and got a new version of LR on Linerider.com.

I sent Zeno a message on skype, though I haven't seen him on there much lately.

EDIT: Oh, if you have any old sol files (or sketches or screenshots), I'd love to add them to my Line Rider Archive project.

i made a track that went viral

make sure to use LRA or http://lr.conundrumer.com if you dont want to download LRA (mhenr18 and i are currently working on adding the advanced tools to www.linerider.com ). the old school way of making tracks is frustratingly time consuming.

also, you should look into programming. LR is honestly a huge simplification of physics, and is more relevant to coding

Hey! Glad to see you as well.
That is fascinating. I don't know the first thing about coding, so I would probably be way out of my depth. I'm not that far into my physics studies either. I've only just scratched the surface. But if you have any questions about pure newtonian mechanics that would be relevant, I could hopefully answer.

And a 3D LR game would be amazing. I'll definitely get back to you when/if I can be of help. I'm taking a course in coding next semester, but I have no idea how in-depth that will be, or how complicated calculating the plane collisions would be.

Yo, yo! It's great to hear that you're still playing! I checked out everything you linked and mentioned, and I am speechless. I am without speech.

I first saw the ten year LR anniversary video, which brought up a lot of memories. I kept thinking "Wow, we really pushed that game to its limits." Then I saw the top ten video for 2016, which blew both my mind and every conception I had of any limitations to LR.

Your personal 10 year anniversary video was really touching. If someone could be described as the ever beating heart of LR, it would certainly have to be you. And This Will Destroy you seems like an immense and groundbreaking project! I wish you the best of luck with it, and I'll be sure to watch it if I drop by at some point after it has been released. I remeber seeing Driftwood earlier. That ending scene is beautiful. I checked out i squared as well, and truly enjoyed it. And boy, The Gorge was fantastic. I'm glad to see that scenery tracks of that magnitude are still being released.

All this sounds great. I'll be sure to check out LRA.

Thank you for contacting Zeno. I appreciate it.

I don't think I have much of anything, sadly. It is probably stored away in some obscure mediafire and pohotobucket accounts somewhere. I'll let you know if I somehow stumble over anything though.

Also, if I do manage to get into my YT account, I'd love to link to this site in an annotation on BS (if you guys would like me to do that.) I noticed that it's the third video to appear if you search for line rider now, so it could hopefully send a couple of people this way.

Hey man! Glad to see you too. And I am honored to hear that. You are a legend. Rigamortis was a beast unlike any I have ever seen before. Brilliant stuff.

I'm definitely going to do that! And yes, from what I've seen so far, you guys have taken this game to a whole nother level.

You guys are all insane (in the good way.) That track is hilarious. Excellent idea and execution.

I will, thanks! It certainly was. I enjoyed the challenge though. And in retrospect I think it helped make me more patient. But it will be a childhood dream come true to finally play an efficient version of LR. Can't wait to mess around with it.

And as I mentioned above, I'm taking a course in coding next year. Probably through the lens of physics, but I am excited about it.

Hey dude, great to hear from you again! Sounds like you're doing pretty damn well, I wouldn't have expected you to go into physics!

I've been producing and DJ'ing in the drum & bass scene and it's going well. Currently hosting my own event in the Netherlands, for with I have around 20 helping me out which is great. I'm working together with RAM Records' talent Bensley, write for the biggest and official Dutch DnB platform Drumandbass.nl and am going to London soon to interview Camo & Krooked!

Finally I'm trying to get into music school atm. Hopefully I'll be studying Composition & Music Production next year so I can really get good at production.

Hey man, no worries about our collab. I don't remember where we left it off either, but I lost motivation/interest and have a lot of other stuff going on in my life and am not prioritizing creating tracks anymore (as everyone will have noticed...). Feel free to do with the .sol whatever you want (can be released as we have it, or you could create more scenery/add more track etc.)

I remember the song is Falling and the offset is like 6.5 seconds or something. I think I still have a recording of rabid who pre-recorded it before I started using LRA with the playback function.

Post by Z_N-Freak Thu Apr 20, 2017 1:31 pm

Nope that's not it.

You created a soundless recording for me around 24/03/2015 before LRA came out (or before I started using it):
http://www.mediafire.com/?4ia77r5nxznet

I know, because it's the date when I send an email to LRG sharing it with him (and it also mentions it was created by you :] ). It should be synced to HAIM - Falling with 6.5 seconds offset https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIjVpRAXK18

I made more track after that, which I shared with Lukking at some point, as we were both looking for input on each others tracks (he was working on ASSAULT at the time);
https://www.mediafire.com/?yzmd6o1iumy23sb

I think I was still not drawing lines in LRA, but I was checking the sync in LRA for sure. At that point I realized the music sync wasn't all that great, especially in the beginning and lost a lot of my motivation to finish the track (I had intended to sync it to the full song). I should've chosen a more realistic goal and/or should've worked in LRA from the start (if possible).

Anyhow, I'm not even sure if the 1.4 MB .sol is all I did (I can't check it right now as I'm at work), because I remember at some point working just in LRA on this and if I'm not mistaken, it should be an .trk in that case. I'll check on my PC at home if I still have something more on there, but otherwise this might be all there is left, because my work laptop got cleaned at some point, so no more LR on it, heh (our company underwent a merger, and things have gotten stricter around here).

Edit:
And I don't have a .sol with LRG's scenery, so maybe you should ask him to share it with you, as he drew some beautiful stuff. He send me some screenshots and they were amazing (I'll leave it up to him to share those, but I still have them in my email if he wants me to share).

Oh I do have that sol! I didn't realize it was going to be a collab since I only had the bare track with your saves. Dug around a bit and I did find the recording I sent you as well. It was a few months before LRA came out. I don't have any of the scenery but yeah that should be up to LRG to send me if he has it, and wants to.

The sol I have is 53 seconds and 1400 lines - if you can find a newer one let me know. For now, I'll wait until we find out if LRG has a sol with scenery and if you have a more recent version, but I'd love to give whatever furthest-along version we can find an archival release if you guys are cool with that Very Happy
