Hollow Victory Empty Hollow Victory

Post by [senpai] kevans Tue Dec 10, 2013 12:04 am

Hi.

I promised myself that I would finish this before the end of the year, and I did mention in my good bye thread I would release a track. This is the sequel to Sandy's City, and it took me 8 months to make.

Some of it was pretty cool, but it took a really long time to build up. All of the little bumps near the beginning got a tad boring after the first 15 seconds or so... Neutral

Just because you're trying to do something slower to build up tension doesn't mean you have to make the beginning crappy. Anything would have been better than a bumpy, single-directional pencil line. I wish the actual flatsled parts had more attention payed to them, they look really half-assed and are really not worth waiting for. It would be hard to make me believe you cared about this track, so I'm going to assume you're not going to be too upset by this review. I just wish that you had made the buildup more interesting and the climax more impressive, as it is it's just disappointing

Yeah, the buildup was really long. Yeah, the pressure was pretty wonky. But dang, that climax was actually very well executed; I really was captivated when you got into the highspeed flatsled, and enjoyed it throughout thereafter. Could have done without the first three minutes or so, but having some tension and release in there was quite gratifying. I can't explain why I liked this, but I did.

The beginning was a little too slow, but at the build up I liked the rest of the track. It was simple but still entertaining enough for me to watch all the way through.

I guess this is the part where I explain my track and rationalize your reactions as to why they are wrong, but surprise surprise, this is what I wanted people to feel, whether they liked it or not.

I didn't start working on this track until three days in. I started off with that really smooth flat sled as sort of a start, no clue what song to use. Eventually I played it to the song you hear, and imagined the climax and thought it would be amazing, so off I went.

This was so incredibly intentional. Around the time I began on this part, there was a discussion about what makes tracks professional or not. One line was mentioned that if a new guy makes a track, everyone knows it's bad, but won't say it directly to their face. At the same time, if a pro makes a noobish track, it suddenly becomes profession with the excuse of "I purposefully did it." So I went along with this bad flatsleding (not done with pencil mind you), and tried to keep a decent pace. But as you can clearly see, I fail at keeping a speed. This is because I wanted the track to "sync with the emotion", to emulate the lyrics, to impose an "impeding disaster" (so to speak), and terrible flatsled on it's own fit that hole perfectly. I wanted people to feel uneasy, and I managed to do that.

Actually you nailed it right on the head. I put very little effort for that build up. I wanted it to be a sudden transition, I didn't care if the viewer was to expect it, or not to expect it. I just wanted it out of nowhere, regardless of how smooth it was. The effort was also somewhat piss poor. Along with that "noob/pro" thing, I made that huge slow chunk very linear. and tbh, it was hard to keep it that way, and hard to get out to maintain that uneasy feeling, which is why it took me so long, that climax was what was stopping me.

So call it what you want, good, bad, lazy, amazing, what ever. it's by no means professional in anyway, but it should make a lot more sense after this discussion, and i can promise you if I ever finish that other flatsled track I have lying around, it'll be way more energetic and "professional" looking, no artsy fartsy bull shit anywhere.

tl;dr: art is interpretive

I love how our visions are very similar.
Sweet job man. I thought you could've spiced up the beginning by adding some more zero point nosies instead of all flatsledding. They're just as 'basic' as flatsledding anyway :P
I really liked how you made Bosh go back over (mostly) the same path from where he came. Only thing that bothered me was that he was losing speed without the music losing its intensity. But hey, that's pretty difficult to maintain anyway. Some well-hidden stacked red lines might've worked.
Anyway interesting work. I'd like to see more Smile

The big bowl of flatsleding could have used some variation. It didn't rotate as much, didn't go from clockwise to counterclockwise loops enough.
