I believe forumotion fails at coding WYSIWYG.

How to fix it:

while editing your post or signature, click this button: Having problems with your signature? Switch_wysiwyg

and use BBcode with plain text for formatting ([b], [quote], [img], etc)

If you don't know what BBcode is, go here: http://www.phpbb.com/community/faq.php?mode=bbcode

I personally type all my posts in BBcode on this site, this WYSIWYG editor sucks IMHO.
