It's similar to a bimanual, except you use an every frame curve the first time around, and then go back and draw a second line completely underneath it. I use them more than I do bimanuals, personally.

It's sorta a manual under a quirky curve, I guess. Allowing you to reuse it as a granual later.

I'm doing a terrible job at explaining this, yes. Although what we explained as a lily pad doesn't look like what I had thought of as a lily pad at all.

Isn't a lilypad just a manual curve that's broken up into little dotted lines? As in, it's an inversed string chain.
