Maximum number of lines

Post by jmcinvale on Mon Feb 06, 2017 9:11 pm

I use the beta 2 version of Line Rider and was wondering if there is a maximum number of lines.

No only limited to the power of your computer and the version you used. LRA can handle 100k+ lines very well so long as they are not in one place, that is when yo u get lag.

Ok thanks.

I've been working on a track for 2-3 years off and on with the point being to see just how large I can make it.

I did notice that as the track size increases the FPS starts to decrease.

Eventually I suppose the track size will get so large as to slow to a crawl at which point I either stop or get a more powerful computer.

Now is it possible to make a track so large that it even slows to a crawl on even the most powerful home computer?

Theoretically, yes. But it would probably have to be absolutely massive.

There are some horror stories from people who used to make scenery tracks in Beta 2. Some people found themselves watching through their track at around 1 frame per second, if I remember correctly. That's part of the reason splitting was invented, although now more modern versions are able to handle almost anything without much lag.

One famous story was when Snooze worked on Tonight, because fast-forward didn't exist and flags require an initial playthrough, he'd start the track, go make himself a sandwich, come back to his computer, and eat the sandwich while the track played to the part he wanted.

Thankfully, we're in better times, and I was able to scene this track by Cereal and keep this monster of a project on a single save file, thanks to Line Rider Advanced early last year.

If you're in beta 2, it's probably gonna get nasty for you around 5000 lines, if you have a good computer. When rabid was recording my track, he opened The Gorge in beta 2, to see if it worked on his relatively decent Macbook. The whole shebang didn't make it a frame before beta 2 crashed.

I'd say give one of the other versions a go, if you're interested in keeping your track moving lag-free. That's my totally-unsolicited-advice-of-the-day.

www.linerider.com

load in your .sol using "Load Track" and "Load from File" and save yourself some sanity. you won't be able to reach the maximum number of lines.

Largest known save created through traditional means is a merged version of Incito Scaena that is about 250,000 lines. Runs just fine on any of the new engines. Beta 2 will crash at about 70,000-100,000 no matter how fast your computer is.

i love how when conun sees a thread he asks himself how he can fit a plug for lrjs/.com in.

The maximum number of lines is determined by how well the memory is managed in the line rider port, how much memory the system allows to any given, and the maximum line counter in the lr port. In beta 2, technically the maximum line counter has the entropy of 2^64, which may or may not care about negative numbers, which would put it at 2^63 -1. LRA stores line IDs in 4 bytes, and uses all bits, making the limit technically 4294967296 if you have half of them as scenery lines. Both of these limits are very impossible to attain due to the fact you'd run out of graphical and video memory long before then, and there may be other parts of the game that would crash first. But, in the .trk format, you can fit 4 billion lines.
