WRTL's Changing!
Hello, folks!
@Opal Rider, @Apple, and yours truly are happy to introduce a whole slew of new things, right on time for the holidays! I'm sure there are tons of questions, so I'll make sure to answer as many as I can! I'm gonna try and answer most of this in advance, so this list is pretty exhaustive.
Anyway, I'm spending the rest of today moving threads so this is resolved by Christmas.
Happy Holidays!
- New Sections:
- So I went through the naming system here, and found that some of the names were somewhat confusing. Let's go in order of section size.
- New Indexes: "The Theater" and "WRTL" are only somewhat descriptive. With "Line Rider Creations" and "Community Center," I hope to distinguish between things that are standalone works and things that relate to the community.
- Changes in "Line Rider Creations":
- Community Picks: this reflects a change I've been wanting to make to featured movies, which I'll describe in further detail in the second section.
- Finished Projects: basically what it is now—anything the creator considers to be a finished project.
- Unfinished & Unusual: rebranded, since I'm giving progress threads their own subsection, since I want it to be easier to sort out the really unusual videos from "I'm making a track, check it out."
- Tutorials: I really want to push for tutorials being made, so I'm assigning them special importance by giving it its own subforum here.
- Changes in "Community Center":
- Trackmaking Central: this is so it's immediately clear—threads in here are about the game of line rider. This wasn't initially clear. Contests and Collabs have their own sections. Existing threads are archived at the moment, but will be moved in the coming days.
- Site Discussion: similarly—this is about things happening on the site. Very meta. Subsections pertaining to this have been moved here.
- Help Center: will no longer contain tutorials for the reasons given above. A feedback section has been added, so anyone who wants to talk with me or any of the staff about an issue will get a direct and (hopefully) immediate response!
- Off-topic hasn't changed lol just stay civil

- On Features:
- Features originally came about as a way of picking out specific tracks that were largely considered to be unique and innovative. Given how few of us there are, it's come to a point where tracks release at slower rates, and features have become relatively frequent. With this in mind, how do we bring back the selectivity of previous features in a smaller environment?
In past years, only the LCC and the staff voted for features. I don't want to go back to that system for several reasons. Firstly, the LCC are no longer a thing. Secondly, it was closed off from the rest of the community, and I want there to be a certain level of transparency about the process. Secrecy isn't always great, you know? But the one thing the old system had going for it was that features were less disputed in the public sphere. Keeping vote tallies anonymous behind a hidden subforum meant that there weren't witch hunts for no or maybe voters and vice versa. Noting this, here's my proposed system.
We have a panel of 5 judges. Who these people are will vary, but at any given time, 2 of these people will be from the staff, and 3 of these people will be selected from a pool of panelists, nominated by the members of WRTL, and selected by staff. Simple majority vote. This is not a for-sure thing: I want to hear thoughts on alternate systems and tweaks you'd make to this, but it seems like a good compromise between the two systems that will allow for a certain... gravitas? I dunno. Let me know in the feedback thread here.
- Pips:
- Nothing is changing in how the PIPs are awarded. You win a contest or get a community pick, you get a PIP. Given how large the timescale is on these, though, I'd say it's only fair that we abolish the time limit on these. As you gather more pips, the older ones will be shunted down and cycled out after you reach a max of 3. If you want to keep particular pips, let me know and I'll add that info to a little thread I'm keeping in Feedback here.
Anyway, I'm spending the rest of today moving threads so this is resolved by Christmas.
Happy Holidays!

Re: WRTL's Changing!
I say keep featuring the way it is, although featuring is almost pointless given the small number of tracks released...
Also having 2 staff judges is not okay IMO given the very similar track opinions of the 3 current staff members. Keep it how it is let the people decide.
I do like the PIP changes however very nice.

Re: WRTL's Changing!
I think me and OTDE used to have similar track styles, but that's changed over time. However, if people are unnerved with having too many staff people on the court I personally wouldn't be against bumping it down to one per cycle, since it wouldn't act as a sway in voting at all by that point.
The pointlessness of features was one of the biggest things brought up in the conversation we had as well, and if that were to change, my opinion sways to the "change it, or dont have it at all" side of the spectrum. I really don't like the term participation trophy, but it's the first thing that comes to mind.
Thank you for your feedback though, we'll be sure to take them into consideration soon (I'm not making conversation easy by being away from Skype right now, so we're working around that roadblock )

Love the new sections, they really are better than what they were before
Me and otde were talking about the feature system before in pm, and now that I think about it, maybe instead of 2 staff and 3 others, maybe just choose the absolute best few for the job.

I don't mind trusting the panel of judges so long as I detect no bias.
Also, just because there is no LCC doesn't mean there can't be again.

Yeahhhh, that's pretty much what it is, just rotating, and we don't want to pressure people into collabs. So it's feel weird to call it LCC when one of the C's is missing.

Re: WRTL's Changing!
There aren't any unbiased members of this community. An unbiased panel of 5 can't exist. And how can we trust 5 people to vote everytime, when there hasn't even been a movie featured in months... (there have been some that qualified). The community picks section is exactly that, what the community wants. If people want to vote they will, if not they don't want to.And it isn't a community decision if we all don't get a vote. I feel like this is an electoral college we are trying to install, and the electoral college elected Trump, where as Hillary won the popular vote. I personally believe the electoral college is corrupt and not true democracy, but whatever.

Re: WRTL's Changing!
Merry Christmas all!
Seems like I haven't fully considered the ramifications of the panel system. There's very few people here right now, so it wouldn't have much effect other than creating divides. I hope y'all can understand why I brought it up, but it looks like I probably won't implement it, given some of the points raised. Understand that I'm not trying to "install" anything other than do what I can to make the site better, and it looks like this isn't the way!
We haven't been doing well on keeping up on things here, and that's my fault. In the future, expect to see more, better, and more frequent content from the staff than during this slump of ours!

Hey now, I can't be biased cause I don't know what's good or not :^)
Re: WRTL's Changing!
On one side I agree with you, but on the other side it's clear that the old system doesn't work anymore. There are too few votes, hence no features for months.Sheldon wrote:There aren't any unbiased members of this community. An unbiased panel of 5 can't exist. I think this panel could work, but the people in there should all have different visions and should be able to take and respect the perspective of the rest of the panel. It also shouldn't be called community picks if the panel decides. I think featured movies is fine in that case
Maybe it's an idea to just pilot this for a few months and see how it goes? We can find out what's the best way to manage this and reverse it if it doesn't work. If everyone wants to give this a proper chance I think it could be a great way to keep featured movies alive consistently, because a track being featured or not is not dependent on how many votes it gets - which is heavily influenced by timing.

Re: WRTL's Changing!
This is how it currently looks like:
It varies, but it's fair to say that typically, 10-13 people will vote in the average poll.
Suggestion: how about letting 10-13 people decide whether a track should be community picked?
25 people visited the website within the last 24 hrs. Out of all these only 50% voted.
13 out of 25; a playerbase that has recently gotten a boost in light of christmas break and general changes.
srsly.
also, why are there two columns
But if you want to reach the other half, reach out the the lazies. Going from home page to submiting your vote takes like 5 clicks. Which tracks to feature are, especially during periods with litte activity, the most relevant/hottest topics. so put it in the dead space. pick your spot
The chatterbox. supposed to be lit, too bad i wont ever find out because finding out requires an additonal click. And also why is it so wide, I could write all the lyrics to American pie start to finish on one line.
TL;DR
Enough people vote. Can potentially increase number of votes by making voting more available.

Re: WRTL's Changing!
Added the chatbox as a default widget, so trust me, I'm aware and not happy with it either. Would love to do CSS work with people who know what they're doing, as opposed to myself.

Re: WRTL's Changing!
I think Anton is right. OTDE, is it possible to have a poll where the chat would normally be so ppl can vote without clicking anywhere else?

as for the catbox, why not just re-implement the old livestream.com one, I seem to recall it working just fine

Re: WRTL's Changing!
@Anton: 10-13 votes is not enough to come to a decision if the poll isn't one-sided. With a result along the lines of 7/4/2 Yes/No/Meh it would be very difficult to come to a decision. Something has to change.
This is a dank idea!Lukking wrote:I think Anton is right. OTDE, is it possible to have a poll where the chat would normally be so ppl can vote without clicking anywhere else?

Re: WRTL's Changing!
My only fear is that the lazier people we're trying to pander to with this system might vote without watching the tracks or putting much thought into it. It's worth a test though, and a good way to get people from Reddit immediately involved with the site.

Re: WRTL's Changing!
7y/4n/2m wouldnt be hard in my opinion because yes outnumbered no and maybe combined.
What do the different votes mean?
Yes - i like the track enough to feature it
No - [insert opinion], and/but not worthy å feature
Maybe/meh - ususally å statement, but bottom Line is that someone who votes m, isn't convinced the track is feature worthy.
I propose using a formula. For example:
yes/(no+meh)>=1.1
The last number is just a suggestion, we'd have to agree on the standard ratio

That's essentially the formula I used when I ran it, but I resisted having an official formula (for various reasons)Anton wrote:I propose using a formula. For example:

Re: WRTL's Changing!
I understand your stance on not having an official formula, but having one makes it possible to automate the process.rabid squirrel wrote:That's essentially the formula I used when I ran it, but I resisted having an official formula (for various reasons)Anton wrote:I propose using a formula.
