{confine} - Sheldon

Post by Sheldon on Sun Feb 21, 2016 2:48 am

Link

I've been working on this for several months.
Started this project as an attempt to imitate Leomur's style, but soon realized how tedious that was.
So I kind of just started imitating Splashzone, but I think by the end I developed my own style?
It was good to experiment with low speed, very fun project.

This one is for you, SPL4SHZ0N3.

Big thanks to rabid for editing!

As I should probably always preface, this is subjective. Feel free to disagree-- it's no skin off my back.

Interesting. One of the things I think you do extremely well, and actually probably better than anybody else here, Sheldon, is that you take established or conventional ideas and you push them to the nth degree. Valence 3 is a great example of this-- it's flingquirk that's so pushed and ridiculous that it sparks discussion. Usually, as in the case of Assault, V3, and WTK, the questions are twofold: "is there a limit?" and "is this limit worth pursuing?" Regardless of whether the answer to the second question is "yes" or "no," the three tracks I just named, in addition to this one, deserve a certain level of respect for the sheer chutzpah it took for their creators to make them.

This track is a recycling manifesto. It's a lot more confined (hur hur) than most of the other comparable tracks I've seen, like II and Serein. II has an fantastic sense of space: there's lots of quieter parts, and it feels like there's a decent mix of highs and lows. If Confine has a glaring flaw, it's that it doesn't have enough in the way of open spaces. Yes, there are defined sections, but because they're so close together, it doesn't feel like they fit cohesively, kind of in the same way the recycling section of Interrobang felt.

That being said, the single airtime//interlude was one of the highlights for me, because it felt like I was diving back into an ocean. Definitely a great moment. The stops were everything I'd want from a Splash track, but also excellently synced. Worked well with the song. I'm starting to wonder, though, how much I've become desensitized to syncing. In a lot of other tracks, when I saw a sync, it would usually be the highlight of the track, and I'd be like "HELL YEAH." Now I'm just kind of left... nonplussed? I think a lot of it boils down to song choice. There's not a lot of change in the song you picked, and so all the syncs kind of blended together. Compare this to, say, Phunner, where there's this huge buildup and then BOOM. It has a crazy impact on the viewer and the track goes bananas.

Lots of things I enjoyed here, some things I didn't. All in all, there's a lot of different directions you can take your tracks, and I'm interested to see which way you go.

Sheldon, you are the best trackmaker ever imo. Very versatile. Every style you attempt turns out to be the best of its kind!

This is the best, and most skillful, compact quirk that has ever been made. Easily.

It is impossible to find words that do this track justice.  Thank you for the dedication.

I really liked this one. I feel like it took the concept of power applied to dense quirk and reused the shit out of it and it left me feeling very satisfied

In terms of novelty, I think that hand fling around a single point in space is the coolest part of the entire track, easily. And while I can say I agree with OTDE's criticism, I also feel like a lot of it was on purpose for the point of experimentation. When the biggest flaw is that there aren't any open spaces in a track called confine, that might be considered a job well done. And from that point on it's just something to pay attention to in future tracks.

I'm impressed that I wasn't the only one grossed out by the kerning.
Great track. Not much else for me, personally, to say. I can't imagine the patience and determination required.

You can adjust the spacing between individual letters (that's what kerning is). It's really not a big deal. Most people won't even notice it, unless you're a designer...or whatever chuggers is...

That was amazing, it's hard to make something compact like that so dynamic and smooth throughout, and you took that to a new level. My only complaint is that I wish the top of bosh's hat would've become the dot for the i in the monument. It feels like an opportunity missed =P

Not as big of a fan of this as most people. While it's impressive that you can recycle space, manuals and gwells that many times, aesthetically this track is a trainwreck. He was just tumbling through the sea of dots all the time.

I don't think the focus of this track is recycling, that's just a side effect of the style that sheldon was going for... Sheldon, I think you did develop your own style, and I'd love to see more tracks like this.
