Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit Empty Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit

Post by Chuggers Tue Sep 08, 2015 11:26 pm

https://www.reddit.com/r/linerider/comments/3k3idq/why_we_need_to_migrate_to_reddit/

Post from reddit:
Kevans wrote:So I understand that moving to a new website is something we aren’t as willing to, and believe me, I wasn’t at first. So I’m writing up this guide to inform any passerby's from WRTL or ELR or .org or whatever previous community you’re from.

What Reddit does better than forumotion:

1) Auto-moderation: Reddit has a few features that can make staff jobs easier, but can also benefit the community. For starters, if a topic is too old, it can no longer be commented on or rated. This prevents lingering discussions from cluttering the main board and trolls from ruining honest ratings.
Another thing that could be implemented after some time is a “karma” filter, meaning we can make it so if a certain user doesn’t have a high enough approval rating, their comments have to be approved by staff before it’s visible to public. This means, if enabled, you as a community don’t have to lift a finger to report that fake account being an asshole.

2) It’s community driven: One amazing thing about reddit is when you come to a specific page, you expect the content it’s named after, and the people who are active there make sure of that. If anything is posted that doesn’t relate to the subreddit theme, it is encouraged you downvote the post. This applies to comments as well, if they are negative, hateful, and do nothing to encourage discussion, downvote and it will eventually be auto-hidden.
On the other hand, when things are positive, you vote them up. This helps people see what comments are the most helpful or informative. This is what you want to aim for in a reddit thread. Reddit encourages always being helpful and relevant to the subject.

3) Your accounts are global: When you sign up for a reddit account, you can access (most) every subreddit, comment on threads, and post links. Your karma score is global, this number reflects who you are as a member of the reddit community, as people do use this number to gauge how trustworthy you are as a member.

4) Sharing: Short and simple, as we gain more members and active regulars, the more topics will be made, and the more ratings we’ll be receiving. The act of upvoting a topic makes it more visible to the public, as someone who may be strolling by will see it and link the topic elsewhere. Yes you heard that right, people will link our content on other subreddits in the act of “Hey, check this out”. Potentially drawing more members to us.

What we aim to do better than other forums:

Reddit is about delivering guaranteed content to the reader, and that’s what we’ll do. We are trimming what we’ve deemed “fatty” and “toxic”, or “stiffling” and “oppressive” and making sure only healthy discussions take place.

We’re removing the notion that we need to award our more skilled members with a rank and fancy color, and removing the idea that a track has to go through a voting process. The only ranks you will see are staff. No featured tracks, as this has caused too many heated debates and rash behavior to simply carry over. Instead, we want to discuss our opinions on riders, as we and our tracks are not equal in everyone’s eyes.

We want to do a weekly discussion on riders and tracks. Where the first Saturday of each month we (staff) will post a topic to discuss a rider (include a few of their tracks) and every other Saturday, we’ll have the weekly discussion focus on one track.

Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit Empty Re: Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit

Post by rabid squirrel Wed Sep 09, 2015 1:29 am

My biggest issue with reddit is that it is a site of content discovery, not content creation. Users are HEAVILY discouraged to post their own stuff. There is even a strict rule that if more than 10% of your topics are your own stuff, you are declared a spammer and banned. This is regardless of any rules of individual subreddits - it is enforced by the reddit admins, and if the subreddit keeps violating this the subreddit can be deleted. Chuggers, looking at your 10 most recent topics:
Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit
there is now no reason to not switch to twitch.tv for the livestream
its coming
The OFFICIAL Chuggers Preview Thread for men
WCC Project: Offsled Collab
snapchat

制限

Live and Let Die ~My Masterpiece
All the stuff in bold is stuff that would be counted as your content. That's nuts to say we should confine that to 10% of our threads.

The truth is that it's not a site for sharing what you've made - it's a site where you post stuff OTHERS have made. Everyone is encouraged to browse, comment, find stuff, post it, but never to actually create because that makes your karma score go down. That's why all the reddit traffic we get is fickle and nobody sticks around - they are here to watch stuff, but they would never think of joining our community and making stuff themselves. Or they wouldn't be on reddit.

I knew I'd be back here for something stupid.

rabid squirrel wrote:My biggest issue with reddit is that it is a site of content discovery, not content creation. Users are HEAVILY discouraged to post their own stuff. There is even a strict rule that if more than 10% of your topics are your own stuff, you are declared a spammer and banned.

Let me stop you right there and take a look at this 10% thing:

https://www.reddit.com/wiki/selfpromotion
You should submit from a variety of sources (a general rule of thumb is that 10% or less of your posting and conversation should link to your own content), talk to people in the comments (and not just on your own links), and generally be a good member of the community.

posting and conversation should link to your own content

posting and conversation

What this is saying is that what you post should be 10% or less of things you've made, this includes comments. This isn't a strict rule in the first place, it is a guideline, which means it's up to the moderators to decide if you're spamming. It's to encourage people to do more sharing and discussing. Post comments on other previews, share someone else's track, but it's not wrong to post your own content and go over this 10%, that's for staff to decide. If you're at the point to where an admin bans you, then you're most likely doing something worse than deviating in what you post. Also, by the act of posting ANY sort of content, you're giving every other subscriber the opportunity to comment on threads, helping balance out this 10% guideline. This is doing the community a favor.

Due to the nature of /r/linerider, content creation is primarily what we do. The second primary thing we do is comment. As long as you're posting comments on other people's posts, that's perfectly fine. If Reddit didn't allow us to share content we've made, subreddits like these wouldn't exist:

https://www.reddit.com/r/rct
https://www.reddit.com/r/Doom
https://www.reddit.com/r/Music
https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming
https://www.reddit.com/r/audiosurf
https://www.reddit.com/r/earthporn
https://www.reddit.com/r/Militaryraging
https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace
https://www.reddit.com/r/ukulele
https://www.reddit.com/r/Entrepreneur
https://www.reddit.com/r/mfw

It's easy to tell that more or less the posts you see there are self posts of something the user created. I could scour for more subreddits, but I've made my point.

Au revoir.

Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit Empty Re: Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit

Post by rabid squirrel Wed Sep 09, 2015 11:37 am

@kevans

direct from reddit's FAQ:
If over 10% of your submissions are your own site/content/affiliate links, you're almost certainly a spammer
https://www.reddit.com/wiki/faq#wiki_what_constitutes_spam.3F
Near the bottom, "what constitutes spam". This also includes youtube channels - your youtube channel is considered an affiliate link

Here is a subreddit that had tons of trouble with this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/indiegaming/wiki/spam
1. Ensure minimal account requirements to promote your work:
- account must be a minimum of 90 days old
- the account must show activity during that time
- account must not violate the reddit 10% rule globally (not just /r/indiegaming, but over all of reddit)
Every time you make a submission, a bot will check to see if you're violating the 10% rule. If you are, you'll likely be both banned from /r/IndieGaming and banned from all of reddit as well.
Signed up to reddit to post your track? wait 3 months and comment on other things on reddit or you'll get shadowbanned

From the thread where they started this policy:
According to reddit, if over 10% of your submissions are from the same site or author, you are a spammer.
Submissions, not comments. Comments have zero affect on the 10% rule.
As for youtube, a second report is submitted with percentages for each youtube channel linked to. If submissions to a particular youtube channel make up more than 10%, you're in violation. If they don't, then you're fine.

Ah, I see where your confusion is then. That bot you've pointed out is something only that subreddit has. I kid you not, you can make bots to patrol a specific subreddit or the entire site if you want. That banning rule is something specific to that subreddit.

As for /r/linerider, making an account to post your first track is not spam. That's what we want you to do, again the ten percent rule is only a guideline. It's up the the staff of a subreddit to enforce that.

Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit Empty Re: Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit

Post by rabid squirrel Wed Sep 09, 2015 12:02 pm

What I can definitely tell you is that the admins will not shut /r/IndieGaming[3] down for not enforcing the 10% rule. If they did that, they'd also be shutting down many other much larger subreddits that were also built around OC.
No, you can't say that. That's just complete and utter bullshit. You are not an admin, and you cannot guarantee this subreddits safety. Reddit has a history of banning subreddits for spam, and that's what they will do to us.
https://www.reddit.com/r/IndieGaming/comments/2g2m5u/a_response_from_the_moderators_to_address_the/ckgtzv0

EDIT:
Criticism of the 10% rule should be directed at the admins, not the mods. We're in zero position to change this rule. We have no ability to keep people from reporting our users as spammers, and no ability to keep the admins from banning our users as spammers. All we can do is make our users aware of this rule, and try and help them follow it. We give warnings for users who are in danger zones, and remove posts that would push them over the edge. We require self posts to help give them some breathing room.
I understand your anger at 10%, but it's a site-wide thing, not an /r/IndieGaming thing, so this is the wrong place for this sort of feedback.

Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit Empty Re: Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit

Post by [senpai] kevans Wed Sep 09, 2015 1:02 pm

The issue Rabid is having is he's assumed the way one subreddit interprets the guidelines is how everyone in charge interprets it, and therefore enforced equally across all boards. This is not true, as it is stated as a guideline like I've already linked, stating that you are probably a spammer, not 100%-stop-what-you-are-doing-law-breaker. If this was a strict rule, it would actually be in reddits rules:

https://www.reddit.com/help/contentpolicy

The guidelines are merely there to help new members encourage discussion through the boards they may come across. If a specific subreddit wants to enforce something outlined in the guidelines, that is their choice. It is up to the subreddit to enforce what rules if not specifically stated.

EDIT:

Individual communities on Reddit may have their own rules in addition to ours and their own moderators to enforce them. Reddit provides tools to aid moderators, but does not prescribe their usage

Meaning, unless stated otherwise by an admin, enforcing the guidelines is purely up to the subreddit in question.

Personally, I think anything is better than forumotion, but pragmatically, we're only a community of...how many people? We shouldn't expect any new members anytime soon, and it's not just because of the discussion platform.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it
^ this saying can be easily abused. So, in other words, if there are any tangible issues, then we can consider moving elsewhere. This is where we should start the discussion.

I really like this site. It's cozy and small and nice, and it has been steadfast. Nothing advanced about it, easy to navigate... Like Conun said, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Reddit would be a little strange with how it handles posts. It not being able to be organized at all is the problem I have with it.

Edit: Edited out some stuff I think I was wrong about.

The thing about the subreddit being part of a whole is what will keep people around longer.  Followers will always get the subreddits contents on their pages, instead of coming to a forum, then forgetting about it a week later.

Also, Rabid, you are ignoring thousands of user-content driven subreddits, what are your thoughts on this?

Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit Empty Re: Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit

Post by Fauxfyre Wed Sep 09, 2015 10:29 pm

Okay here's my question to your points you provided. Please respond calmly and maturely, I don't want you to take this as an attack against you personally.
Kevans wrote:So I understand that moving to a new website is something we aren’t as willing to, and believe me, I wasn’t at first.
How much of this was just because of the fact that you basically became the admin of the subreddit and no longer had the staff members above you that you always argue with? The dynamic there is mostly different for you I believe because you always tend to argue with a specific group of people on WRTL, that are not on Reddit or have any analogues (from your POV). As I'll go into, I don't see how big of a difference it is from a regular member's POV.

Kevans wrote:
1) Auto-moderation: Reddit has a few features that can make staff jobs easier, but can also benefit the community. For starters, if a topic is too old, it can no longer be commented on or rated. This means, if enabled, you as a community don’t have to lift a finger to report that fake account being an asshole.
Okay, so first of all, not to downplay anything the current staff does but moderation is really not that hard with this place, and there's no need for auto-moderators. On top of that, this seems to discourage discussion. With the small userbase, it really isn't a big deal if an old topic is bumped, and has many times breathed new life into a good discussion. Not to mention the members that don't come along every day, and oftentimes will only see an important thread or track months after it came out. On top of that, why in the world would we prevent new members from posting new stuff? Isn't the whole problem with the activity that we don't have enough new people coming in posting their tracks? This seems like the opposite of what we need.

Kevans wrote:2) It’s community driven: One amazing thing about reddit is when you come to a specific page, you expect the content it’s named after, and the people who are active there make sure of that. Okay, so this is a problem with WRTL? We have a section for non-LR posts and there's no problem with that. This basically just makes it less of a tight-knit community where most people are friends and strictly LR-only content. Not to mention, the whole fact that posts are auto-hidden and can be downvoted to nowhere is pretty bad for a community of our size. It's better for communities with more comments than you can usually read in a day, but why bother hiding any off the 6 posts we get a day? (if we're lucky). If something breaks the rules, we have enough active staff to take care of it, or can just ignore spam (which we never get).

Kevans wrote:

Right, because what people do on other subreddits should totally matter and automatically make them more prestigious members on /r/linerider. I don't think this is a "plus" personally, and honestly, hardly anybody seems to visit or post on our new subreddit anyways, so I don't know how big of a difference this makes. Sure people can access it with their normal reddit account, but it doesn't seem to make them more likely to post there.

Kevans wrote:

Yes you heard that right, people will link our content on other subreddits in the act of “Hey, check this out”. Potentially drawing more members to us.
This is on the whole "if" we get more members just by moving to Reddit, and honestly still doesn't resolve the issue of people that just look and go away after watching something, which is what happens to most people. I find this point largely irrelevant, Dap posts several LR related things to Facebook and gets many comments, but I have yet to see someone come here due to it.

Kevans wrote:
Reddit is about delivering guaranteed content to the reader, and that’s what we’ll do. We are trimming what we’ve deemed “fatty” and “toxic”, or “stiffling” and “oppressive” and making sure only healthy discussions take place.
Okay, as I mentioned earlier, I think taking out the non-LR discussion only makes the members more alienated from each other, and less friendly overall. I don't think it's a good idea to "trim" all this discussion. And it is hardly "fatty" or "toxic" in any way, all I hear are buzzwords and propaganda in this sentence.

Kevans wrote:

There's still the Krama system, which isn't much different other than it's user driven. There's still nothing to prevent good tracks from getting voted up more than other tracks and being more visible. We already did away with LCC and Elite here, so this point is also irrelevant. Can you also point out to me anything "heated" in recent time over a track being featured? I don't think it's as big of a deal as you make it.

Kevans wrote:

Why can't we do that here? In fact, we used to, with weekly Squirrel whatever, but that clearly wasn't working out too well because it isn't a thing anymore, but it hasn't even been suggested to start something like that here, which would not be hard.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I had other concerns that I was going to include but half of my message got deleted when I was typing it, so I'll post them later. I think this should give you enough to chew on for now, but it isn't the end of it. Thank god I copied the above part after I was done with it so I didn't lose it......

Post by rabid squirrel Wed Sep 09, 2015 11:39 pm

Chuggers wrote:Also, Rabid, you are ignoring thousands of user-content driven subreddits, what are your thoughts on this?
I don't see it. I looked at the subreddits kevans mentioned.

rct - I see mostly images (not tracked by the 10% rule).
doom - I see lots of people talking about playing the game and posting screenshots and music of the game?
music - I mostly see people posting music they like that was created by others
gaming - again, mostly commentary on games that they are playing, not games people made or stuff people made in games
audiosurf - looks to me like no posts have more than 1-3 upvotes? Aka people post videos of themselves playing a game but nobody cares?
earthporn - again, mostly pictures. but I doubt everyone posting is the photographer
militaryraging - this looks like a space for conversations about the military. I don't see anything seriously creative happening here
pcmasterrace - same
ukelele - do you notice a distinct lack of people posting videos of themselves playing the ukelele? I see 4 on the first page EDIT: and they are literally all covers
Entrepreneur - ?????
mfw - literally reposting gifs people found

Another major concern is that there are no real sections to a subreddit besides basically stickies and everything else. I'll repeat: reddit is a great site for having conversations about stuff you like. It's a terrible site for content creators of any kind.

For the record, I hold nothing against people who choose to be active on the subreddit. Just hope you stop by WRTL too from time to time.

I don't see it. I looked at the subreddits kevans mentioned.

rct - I see mostly images (not tracked by the 10% rule)
doom - I see lots of people talking about playing the game and posting screenshots and music of the game?
music - I mostly see people posting music they like that was created by others
gaming - again, mostly commentary on games that they are playing, not games people made or stuff people made in games
audiosurf - looks to me like no posts have more than 1-3 upvotes? Aka people post but nobody cares?
earthporn - again, mostly pictures
militaryraging - this looks like a space for conversations about the military. I don't see anything seriously creative happening here
pcmasterrace - same
ukelele - do you notice a distinct lack of people posting videos of themselves playing the ukelele? I see 4 on the first page

Just

How much of this was just because of the fact that you basically became the admin of the subreddit and no longer had the staff members above you that you always argue with?

I seriously do try to help this community out. Someone has to attack me. I can't even respond to this properly knowing you think I'm deliberately trying to attack someone.

Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit Empty Re: Why it would be beneficial to migrate to reddit

I literally am not going to go through those because I feel I've spent enough time on reddit already.

The Roller Coaster Tycoon subreddit is pretty close to what a line rider subreddit would look like, but I don't really feel like posting screenshots of stuff you did in a game is the same thing as like, a reddit where people post art they made. It just doesnt feel like the same thing.

I went to the reddit photoshop. It's all people talking about photoshop and asking for help, not really anyone creating content and posting it. I even looked at the "art" subreddit. Same thing.

I feel like that makes it pretty clear to me. Reddit is a site that is primarily about looking at and talking about shit other people made. You are a good redditor if you find cool stuff on the internet and post insightful comments about stuff other people found on the internet. I'm just never going to feel at home there. It feels like if someone made the Dude this is Awesome section into an entire website with tons of subsections.

EDIT: made my original edit into a new post because you are responding so damn fast to my posts

These were still all subreddits where the majority of the topics were self posts. It doesn't look like this because you are refusing to actually look at what we've been showing you. you even stated it in this quote.

EDIT: just saw your edit. the LR topic will be just fine. don't cover it up.
